Introduction Into A Whole New Level of Website Control:

Here you will see some of the awesome new features in frugal 3.2.  Just a few include:

• Full Import/Export control over your many frugal settings. Now, creating a complete backup and restoring that backup to your frugal websites is as easy as a few mouse clicks.  Transferring a site is a breeze and implementing custom designs (skins) is now incredibly simple!  (For more info into how this option works you can check out THIS VIDEO)
• Built-In Image Uploader. No longer do you need to use an FTP program to upload custom images to your frugal website.  Just browse and then upload the images directly to a frugal uploads directory on your server.  You then have the ability to rename or delete the image.  It’s super simple and amazingly useful when custom designing your frugal site.
• Full Background Control. Before you just had the ability to change the background colors of most any element on your frugal website.  But now you have FULL control!  Change the type (like horizontal and/or vertical repeating image, static image, color only, transparent, etc..) and, if using an image option, you can specify the image name to be used in that background area.  This, with the new Image Upload option, now gives frugal users a whole new level of design control!
• Thumbnails, Thumbnails, Thumbnails! With the latest Image Thumbnail feature in Wordpress 2.9 you can now easily add thumbnails to your post excerpts.  With frugal 3.2 you now have full control over how these thumbnails display.  Change they way they are re-sized and cropped, their alignment, dimensions and even complete border options.  And turn them on or off at will.
• SKINS!! Both free and Premium skins are and will be available to make creating awesome designs with frugal super easy!
• Some Option Refinement. I not only re-organized the frugal options pages to make it easier to maneuver around to the different settings, but I completely re-built the way frugal interacts with the Wordpress database.  It’s much more efficient, but it does require that you use a simple plugin (that I created) to upgrade from a previous version of frugal.  No need for new installs, but just a heads up if you are upgrading.  (For more information on how to upgrade to frugal 3.2 check out THIS VIDEO)
• Miscellaneous additions and adjustments. I made a few subtle changes like adding independent H1 and H2 font control for your content headings and providing alignment options for logos (both image and text), where before you just had padding to play with.

NOTE: This is an extension of a post that began here… 2010: A New Economy, A New Marketplace And A Need For A Presence Online

In 2010 we will no doubt see an even stronger push for both a business and personal presence online.  In our new economy we have little choice but to stake our claim online or face being left behind by the rest of the business world.  As you’ve already read in the linked post from above, our recent economic woes have pushed forward this natural shift to an online marketplace and a thriving Internet community.  With ‘09 we were faced with the shock of this shift, but in 2010 we are poised for prosperity if we have the right tools in our arsenal.

Starting with the basics and then moving to more advanced advice, I’d like to share with you the tools I have found to be invaluable as I’ve made my move online.  Starting from scratch in the summer of ‘08 and making a full time living online less than a year later, I used these tools to help turn a dream of greater independence into a reality.  So I hope you find this information useful as you too pursue your online endeavors.

The “Stuff”

Just like any endeavor, moving online requires the obtaining of “Stuff”.  Let me lay out my favorites and let you know why I like this “Stuff” so much.

Hosting: Hosting is thankfully fairly cheap these days and most of us can get by with the basic shared plans offered by most any hosting company.  These plans usually provide near unlimited space, bandwidth and domains and reliability to boot.  I’ve been using Hostmonster for years now and have been nothing but pleased with them.  Their up-time is excellent, customer service impeccable and the overall speed of their servers seems well above average.  I’ve never run into a single bit of incompatibility between my Hostmonster server and anything Wordpress (or anything else for that matter).  You can read more about my opinions about Web Hosting if you’d like, but in short, I’ve worked with many different hosts and have yet to find one I prefer over Hostmonster.

Domains: A domain is just the name/location of our website (ie. frugalTheme.com) and can be had for $10 per year or less.  The most popular place to purchase a domain is GoDaddy as this allows you a centralized location to house your growing list of site names (and believe me they will be growing, whether now or in the near future).  GoDaddy gives the user a full spread of powerful domain options and therefore should be strongly considered.  I house some of my domains at GoDaddy, but have actually preferred leaving my main ones with Hostmonster.  Having both the domain and hosting reside with the same company can be a double edged sword, but I prefer it none the less.

Website Software: There are many great options out there when it comes to website software.  Free programs that easily install on our servers and allow us to quickly create and launch a professional presence online.  Some have more options while others tend to be more user-friendly.  But the one that seems to hit the sweet spot for most (and certainly myself) is Wordpress.  Super easy to master on the backend, yet powerful and flexible with tons of great support.  I believe I speak for many when I say that Wordpress is a huge blessing to those who want to spend more time building their online presence and less time building their website.

Wordpress Themes: Now you knew this was coming.   Seriously, though, the skin of your Wordpress website is just as important as any other piece to this puzzle.  Having a powerful, well built Wordpress theme can really give you an edge in finding success online.  Now you know I develop and sell my own, so of course I’m going to recommend frugal, but I have no problem saying that there are TONS of great themes out there (both free and Premium) that can provide you with what you need to build a successful business, blog and/or community.  So whether you buy a copy of frugal or find that perfect fit elsewhere, be sure not to settle when it comes to your theme.  First impressions are a powerful thing and making a good one is absolutely crucial!

Wordpress Plugins: When Wordpress and your theme don’t provide an option that you want or need, look no further than the plugin section of Wordpress.org.  Find what you need to address your issue and go about your way.  Just be careful not to get too plugin happy as you’ll start to bog down your site and make it a chore to move from one page to the next.  You can learn more about some useful plugins here and here.

Newsletter Software: Capturing a continued connection with your audience is key when seeking success online.  We see it all the time (even on this very website) where someone offers some free content for the visitor’s email address.  I used to think this was cheesy, or somehow tacky, but quickly realized that it was not only NOT tacky (you’re providing the visitor with useful free information), but it was a powerful tool that couldn’t be ignored.  There are very few ways to more effectively connect than through old fashioned email and no better way to capture this valuable resource than with Aweber.  I’ve been using Aweber for about 6 months now and have been nothing but pleased with it.  The setup is easy and it just does what it says it will do.  You can find cheaper offerings out there, but I truly that with newsletter software (like many other things) you get what you pay for.

Feedburner: If you have a blog you’re going to want to give your readers a way to subscribe.  The simple answer to this need is Feedburner by Google.  Signup, add your RSS and Email subscription links to your blog (did I mention frugal provides simple options to add these to your Wordpress website.. and you’re good to go.

Social Media

Creating an effective presence online can be a challenge in and of itself, but adding a million different social profile possibilities does nothing but complicate the situation.  My suggestion is to just start with one or two avenues and then go from there.  Twitter and Facebook are good starting points as they are the most popular (Facebook is by far the most popular of the bunch, but Twitter is quickly growing and provides an means of simple connection that even Facebook falls short with).

There are many different things to talk about when teaching someone how to use these powerful programs, but the most important thing is to note the benefit of both being yourself and yet maintaining mindful communication.  We don’t want to be fake, but creating an effective online presence, one which will draw potential customers and followers, requires that we do more than chat about our random musings.  Providing useful information and insight, things that others truly benefit from, is a crucial habit to create.  I’m not suggesting that chatting with friends on Twitter will hurt your reputation or chances for online success, but doing nothing BUT chat about will most certainly be of no benefit.

A Continued Source Of Information And Inspiration

There are many great websites out there that provide both up-to-date information on those need-to-know concerns of the Cloud as well as thought provoking inspiration to keep pushing forward with our goals and dreams.  I’d suggest taking some time to search for such websites and then keep their bookmarks handy as you’ll most certainly need to reference then along the way.

The Rest Of The Story

The above information should give you most of what you need to succeed in terms of logistics, but the rest is really a matter of perseverance, flexibility and a willingness to learn new things all the time.  Just like anything worth achieving, online success almost never comes easy.  I’ve worked my freaking butt off for the last 17 months and have pushed past many times of serious discouragement.  I’ve tried many different avenues and constantly kept my mind open to new ideas.  Much of it has been a struggle, but worth every stinking second!

Here’s a few tips I’ve found invaluable:

• Make friends where you can and build your network of social connections whenever possible. You need a close friend or two who you can truly trust.  This is someone you may one day partner with on a project.  This is a valuable commodity to say the least.  I’ve had a blogging buddy since shortly after I started and it has been one of the keys to my growing success.
• Never put all your eggs in one basket. It’s too easy to focus all our attention on one possibility for online success.  The danger here is that if/when this goal fails to pan out we having nothing else to fall back on.  Discouragement sets in and we risk giving up all together.  I always try to keep one or two other projects on the back burner.  There’s always more than one way to achieve our goals and always having a few options to choose from can keep us moving in a positive direction.
• Live a great life offline. Once you stop enjoying your family, your hobbies and taking care of your mind and body while not connected to the Internet, you’ve lost.  Even if you do find success online it will have been for nothing.
• Keep trying different things until you find what works. If you need to make money online and it’s just not happening with your current venture, set it aside and try something new.  I bounced around from creating blog content with ads, to writing ebooks, to designing websites to developing Wordpress theme software (and then some) and learned something new along the way as well as found what worked for me.  Now I benefit from all of the above and continue to try my hand at other possibilities.
• Never give up and always have fun whenever possible. These are the two most repeated tips for most any venture out there.  But this is only because they are universal truths to success in life.  The second you decide to stop is the beginning of your failure.  The moment you find no more enjoyment is the second your goal has become worthless.

2010 Is Whatever You Make Of It

Wordpress is no doubt an amazing website and blogging platform.  Not only is it well coded, well supported, very user-friendly, (SEO) Search Engine Optimized and super flexible, it’s totally free!  With an ever growing community of users, Wordpress is quickly becoming one of the fastest growing Do-It-Yourself website programs out there.  Yet, just like any piece of software, there is always going to be a need for good documentation and tutorials to help us, as users, figure out how to make Wordpress do what we want and need it to do to achieve our online goals.

Wordpress.org

Wordpress.org is not only the place to download the latest version of Wordpress, but it’s also packed with super in-depth documentation on just about anything you may be interested in regarding the software.  You can find what you need to know about Wordpress by checking out their Documentation, searching and posting to the Forum as well as stay up-to-date with the latest Wordpress news by reading their Blog.

The Many Great Blog And Forum Resources…

Even with all the great information packed into the pages of Wordpress.org, sometimes you have questions that are more custom in nature.  Maybe you want to do something that Wordpress doesn’t do by default or maybe you’re working with a theme or plugin that requires a more broad focus in terms of support.  This is when Google becomes your best friend.

There is a growing list of super useful blogs and web forums out there with free content just waiting to be ingested.  Tons of knowledgeable bloggers and designers/developers who spend their days cranking out useful information on Wordpress, plugins, themes, etc…  The problem is that our needs are often too specific and ever changing to find all we need in one place.  I really can’t think of a single resource that has provided me with every Wordpress insight I’ve required.  Often times I need to know how to do something very specific and may happen upon a completely random website that just so happens to have the answer I require.  Chances are I’ll never even return, yet that one visit was all I needed.  So learning effective search techniques is absolutely essential!

Effectively Searching Via Google

When you want to know the answer to something specific and you want to know fast, Google is the way to go.  Yet just typing a few keywords into Google and pressing ‘Search’ is rarely going to get you the results you’re hoping for.  More often than not you’ll find yourself scrolling through page after page of ‘almost the right answer’ websites.  So you need to learn a few Google Searching Techniques so you can pull your answer up on page one every time.

The simplest way to refine your search is to add quotes around your search text.  When doing so you are telling Google to not only find websites with the text you type, but in the order you type it.  This can quickly take that ‘needle in a haystack’ search and land your answer at the top of page one.  Just don’t use it every time as you will often find the need to let Google broaden its reach for certain inquiries.

There are many different ways to refine your Google searches to help you quickly get the answers you need.  You can search for items that show up in a title of a page or in the URL itself.  Or you can have Google search for your keywords only in a specific website (domain).  There are many more ways to refine your searches, all enabling you to pinpoint  what you want/need to know to accomplish your online goals.  For more information be sure to check out this great resource for Google Search Operators.  Also read about how you can take advantage of Google’s Advanced Search.

Twitter

Another great way to quickly get Wordpress answers (or at least get pointed in the right direction) is to ask on Twitter.  Just be sure to use the word Wordpress and add a hashmark (ie. #Wordpress).  This way you’ll not only have those following you see the question, but those who follow #Wordpress tweets may chime in as well.  Either way this can be a great way to pinpoint answers as you’ll often find others who had the same question at some point and already came across the answer.  A quick link from a Twitter friend can go a long way in reducing your search time.

Bookmark Along The Way

Finally, be sure to bookmark websites and specific web pages as you come across them.  I find that while searching for one answer I’ll come across other useful content regarding Wordpress that I know I’ll want access to down the road.  So bookmark it now so you don’t waste time later, trying to remember where/how you found the page in the first place.  Also, do yourself a favor and create a few folders to organize your growing list of Wordpress bookmarks.  There’s nothing more frustrating that knowing you’ve got the link somewhere, but not being able to locate it.

This is just the tip of the iceberg in terms of useful Wordpress resources, but with this content you should be able to effectively locate those answers you need to Wordpress questions.  The more success you find, the easier it gets.  It’s like fishing…you first need the right gear and then the right location, but after that it’s experience that lands you the big one.  OK, that was a really BAD analogy!!  You get the point.

First, I just want you guys to know that I truly listen to your requests. frugal is YOUR theme and I want to do everything I can to make it the best it can be FOR YOU!  So per request of a few frugal users I created a basic frugal Theme Handbook to help you get started with your frugal theme.  It does everything from fully introduce you to me and this awesome, to give you an overview of the makeup of frugal and it’s many options and features.

I didn’t go into super detail with the content as I do this with (and can do this more effectively with) the many video tutorials), but this should help most people get a good head start with frugal.  So I hope you find it useful!  It’s only 15 pages, but is pretty packed with the essential information.

A few bug fixes…

I was actually quite pleased with how few bugs were found in frugal 3.0, but the few that came up were noted and fixed.  Most were more specific to certain setups/servers etc.. so there was a good chance you didn’t even come across any.

Added Margins and Padding options…

Though I added a ton of feature widget margin and padding options I missed a few that I wanted to see available so I added them.  Also, instead of having them piled on top of each other I split them up into their corresponding option areas (ie. I put the Margin and Padding options for the Feature Top Widget section in the Feature Top Widget section).

The ability to turn the Design Options off…

I actually forgot to mention this in the video (oops..), but the very first frugal option gives you the ability to disable the frugal design options.  This doesn’t actually effect these options (in other words, you’re not going to make your site actually look any differently by doing this), but it does give you the ability to clean out a bunch of options so you can more easily find the more ‘functional’ options.  Then turn it back on whenever you need to make a design change.  I personally leave it on all the time, but it may be useful to some.

UL Style Options…

A UL or Unordered List, is what you see in many of your sidebar widgets and some of your content.  Often times these lists have dots or squares to list each line.  Now, with frugal 3.1, you can select the type of UL style you want to use for both your content and your sidebars (or you can just turn them off like the sidebars do by default).

Some new Footer options…

I’ve added the ability to enable/disable an Admin login link in the footer (nothing ground breaking, but some may enjoy this addition).  Also, you can now revert your footer links back to the pre-3.0 version style with the shorter footer, having the Copyright and frugal link on the same line.

New Caps Options…

Not very exciting, I know, but now you have more Capitalization options, even in the Navbars (which didn’t have caps options before).

Super useful Navbar options…

You’ve always been able to exclude pages from the main navbar in frugal, but you had to track down the Page ID to do it.  Well, you still have to use the Page ID, but I’ve setup the options area to list all your pages and show their Page ID’s, right next to the option.  I’ve also done the same for your Categories and added the option to exclude Categories from the Category Navbar.

Even cooler, you can now remove specific Page Titles.  By using a snippet of code (an example is give for easy copy and paste) you can use your Page ID’s to remove Page Titles from pages and even your Homepage if you need to.  And don’t worry, these page titles and their SEO friendly H tags still display in the Page Source so your SEO isn’t negatively affected.

The Custom Widgets now have full, independent font and border design options…

Now you can not only create up to 4 custom widgets, but you can full control their look with added font and border design options.  Also, you can now embed them into individual pages using the included ‘Shortcode’ text (as well as hook them into pretty much ANY location of your website).

As for the Custom Function options, I actually dropped two of them.  You still have two to use, but I figured many won’t even use them and those who do should find 2 to be sufficient.  And if you need more you can just add more custom functions to the custom_functions.php file that frugal offers.

I did add one option to that feature, though.  Now you can specify if PHP code is in your custom code, so your function will execute the PHP code if it needs to.

I added some really cool Sidebar Widget border options…

You still have the border options that allow you to surround your entire sidebars, but now you can surround your individual widgets as well.  Pretty cool, huh?!   You can also give your Sidebar Headings a background color.  I played with this option a bit when I finished it and was able to come up with some pretty sweet layouts.  I think you’ll find this to be a great new styling tool.

Also forgot to mention in the video…

With frugal 3.1 you can now easily change the ‘Read more’ text, ‘Subscribe’ text in the right navbar area and the Comment Submit Button text.

And speaking of the Comment Submit Button text, you now have full Submit Button font options.

I moved a few things around…

I tried to keep this to a minimum as to not confuse those who have become acquainted with frugal 3.0’s options pages, but I did move a few things around.  One example is that I moved the Footer options to the Main/SEO page (hence the new name of that page Main/SEO/Footer and the new name of the content page Content/Sidebars).

This should be a smooth update…

Notice I said “should”.  What I mean is that unlike 3.0 which was pretty much a totally new theme, 3.1 just refines 3.0 and shouldn’t disrupt your current setup (if you’re using 3.0) too much or at all.

Let me just cut to the chase and tell you that I’ve taken all that made frugal Premium awesome and all that made frugal Professional awesome and molded them together to make one AMAZING THEME!  But it’s not just the two themes combined.  It’s SO much more!

So yes, frugal Premium and frugal Professional are no more.  Don’t worry, I’m  still supporting them, but this theme is now just frugal and I think you’ll be happy to call it your own.

Full Blown SEO Action!

Before I get into listing some of the many features of frugal 3.0 I just wanted to let you know that frugal now has full blown SEO built in.  NoIndex, NoFollow options, full meta control, In-Page/In-Post options, full control over your page titles, etc…  So you can get rid of that SEO plugin because frugal’s ready to take on your Search Engine Optimization needs.

CMS Page Template

Per request from a few frugal users I’ve created a page template that enjoys its own set of sidebars and gives you full control over their size, amount and position.  This CMS page also has its own hooks so you go even further to separate your more traditional website content and your blog stuff (only if you want to of course .

Did I Mention frugal Is Fast?

I’ve spent a lot of time reducing the clutter, adding caching features and making frugal one fast and efficient Premium Wrodpress Theme. I’ve even included an option to activate a simple Database Query speed test in your sites footer to show you how fast and efficient your theme and plugins really are.

ALL NEW Theme Options Section

I spent the better part of a week completely re-building the frugal Theme Options section.  It’s now much easier to read and navigate.  It also consists of 5 separate pages, not just one long one.

No More Page Or Category ID’s On The Static Homepage

If you already use frugal then you know you can feature pages and posts on your ‘Static Homepage’.  You used to have to specify a Page or Category ID to feature that content.  Now you’ll find easy to use drop-down menus to choose what content to feature.  Just a note: You still have to specify a Post ID if you want to feature your post by that means (ie. Not by category).

Custom Widgets And Hook Options

I’ve dedicated an entire page to giving you the ability to add your own custom functions/widgets and then easily hook them into your frugal Wordpress Website with a simple drop down menu.  You not only have the ability to create a custom widget, you have full control over margins, padding, background color, float location, name, etc..

Speaking Of Details…

I can’t say this enough; frugal 3.0 offers the user FULL CONTROL over their Wordpress website.  I mean FULL control.  You’ll be hard pressed to find a situation where you actually have to touch a snippet of code.  I’m not saying it won’t happen, but I’ve gone to great lengths to make sure it’s a rarity.

Basically what I did was use the Beta version of frugal 3.0 to update my main websites (frugalTheme.com and MotivateThyself.com) and whenever I came across a situation where I need to touch the frugal Custom Stylesheet I would just add that as a feature.  I kept doing this until I no longer need to even touch that file (which is still a frugal option, though .

Awesome Border Options!!

One of the design features that I’ve added that I think is really cool is full border control.  Now you can add borders to areas like your sidebars, content column, full content/sidebar area, feature and home area and so on.  And not just add a border, but fine tune your borders.  Chose the type, style (eg. solid, dotted, dashed, double) thickness, color and then adjust the MANY margin and padding options to get your layout just PERFECT!

Organization Is Key

All this talk about adding features makes me think about a cluttered mess.  So let me assure you that I spent a lot of time organizing the frugal Theme Options pages to be easy to read, maneuver and use.  My goal was to enhance your user experience, not fill it with bloat.

Wordpress widgets are great tools as they allow easy integration of custom content to the different areas of your Wordpress website or blog.  Whether you’re adding a pre-made feature like a ‘Popular Posts’ widget or a custom ‘Text’ widget where you add your own content, you’ll quickly come to appreciate the power that comes with a highly widgetized Wordpress theme.

The frugal Wordpress Theme comes packed with an abundance of widgets that allow the use full control over the content on their Wordpress site.  From the highly customizable static homepage to the multiple site wide feature sections, sidebars and banner section, frugal offers a full plate of widgetized goodies.

Some may find it a bit daunting, though, to determine where each widget section points to.  Though these widgets are descriptively marked, their abundance can make things a bit confusing.  So I’ve created a simple diagram (we’re talking Microsoft Paint kind of simple ) of the many different widget sections in frugal to help make working with these widgets a bit more effortless.
